Bicycling America tells the story of a 66 year old grandfather who has never ridden a bicycle for more than a few miles at a time and sets out to ride a bicycle from one coast of the United States to the other. He does this ride by himself with no one along for company and no one following along in a automobile if anything goes wrong. It recounts the dangers, trials, tribulations, crushing fatigue, and despondency he endures. It also sings with the joy and exuberance only an exciting adventure can bring forth as well as the beauty, friendships, thrills, excitements, and people encountered. It also squeezes in stories of remarkable women and men and the challenges they faced which helped shape the country he crosses. As such, it is a bit of a story about America. It also includes a few of the author’s own life challenges which help in understanding what got him into and through this ride. The prim reason for the ride was to raise funds and awareness for the treatment of a terrible, terminal, disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which afflicts his grandson. All proceeds from the ride and from this book will go towards Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy efforts.
